But before you start shopping, it’s important to know what helmet best suits the type of riding that you’ll be doing.
The Best Motorcycle Helmet for You
Depending on your bike and your personal preferences, some helmets will suit you better than others. You might be looking for a motorbike helmet that works both on the road and off-road, or one that is compatible with helmet intercom systems.
Here are the main types:
Full Face Helmet – With a solid chin bar, full face motorcycle helmets offer the maximum protection for the rider. Because of their exceptional safety, they are used by all the top motorcycle road racers, but it also makes them a great option for any road rider that prioritises safety above all else.
Open Face Helmet – For that ‘classic biker’ look, open face helmets are a mainstay. These give you a great feeling of freedom and speed, but they don’t offer any face protection.
With open face helmets being only recommended for slower speeds, they have become extremely popular amongst scooter and moped owners. Even though open face helmets are missing a chin bar, they can still be fitted with a rider to rider intercom by using a boom microphone, making in-ride communication a breeze.
Modular Bike Helmet – If you are looking for a helmet that can offer the freedom of an open face helmet, but also include protection from the elements, then a modular helmet is the one for you.
With a hinged chin bar that can be locked in the up position, a modular helmet can be used in an open face or full face configuration. Giving the rider greater freedom of choice and making it a lot easier to communicate with others whilst still wearing the helmet. It is for that reason that modular helmets are favoured by tourers and delivery riders.
Dual Sports Helmets – Dual sport helmets, although they appear to be just an off road helmet, they are actually just as adaptable to work as the road. By removing the peak or visor, you can change your dual sport helmets to suit the environment that you’re in.
Or alternatively they can be used with both the peak and the visor as a perfect on road/off road blend. Dual sport helmets are most commonly used by the adventure biking community, but as their name suggests, they suit a varied range of motorcycle disciplines.
Off-Road Helmet – Off road helmets are often referred to as MX helmets because it is through motorcross racing that they were developed. Regardless of which, they can still be road legal and meet the ECE 22-06 safety standards. Off road helmets do have a chin bar but no visor and they are designed to be used with goggles instead.
Road legal, off road helmets are most often worn by bikers that are green lining or trail riding.
Smart Motorcycle Helmets – Smart motorcycle helmets are often thought of as the future of riding gear. Some helmet manufacturers have released ‘smart’ helmets, but due to their weight and complexity, the uptake on them has been slow. Riders seem to favour a helmet and intercom combination, rather than looking for built in technology. But times are changing and, in the future, ‘smart’ helmets could become the norm.
Road Racing Helmet – Racing helmets are the top performing models from each manufacturer. They have special safety certification to make them compliant for different motorcycle competitions. It is important to know which safety standard is needed for each motorcycle championship regulations before you buy your helmet (more about that in a moment).
The two other areas that race helmets excel at, aside from safety, is vison and ventilation, both of which are extremely important and can give a racer an advantage on track.
Motorcycle Helmets that Suit your Style
Naturally, when you splash out on a new helmet, you want to make sure that it a good fit, is within your budget, and suits the style of riding that you’re doing.
No matter what type of helmet you need, we have multiple ranges available and if you need any guidance, we have a team of knowledgeable staff on hand to help you find your perfect helmet.
The Best Motorcycle Helmet Brands
We work with a number of motorbike helmet brands from around the world, and all are fantastic but for different reasons.
Our selection of Arai helmets are all hand made in Japan, just as they have been for decades. But don’t make the mistake of thinking that Arai helmets are old fashioned! In fact, they have cutting edge safety technology in them which no other helmet manufacturer can claim to be doing.
AGV have spent years developing their helmet technology on race tracks with the likes of Valentino Rossi and in more recent year, Marco Bezzecchi. Because AGV work so closely with some of the world’s best riders, it means that you can actually buy replica race helmets that came straight off the production line and into our shop. There is a large range of different paint designs available, from the most flamboyant Italian style to subtle but stylish look.
Airoh exploded into the motorcycle helmet market in 1997, and under the leadership of Antonio Locatelli, they have become another one of the world’s top helmet manufacturers. Every single Airoh helmet is designed, tested, and built in their own helmet manufacturing facility in Italy. We have a wide range of Airoh helmets in our store that go from affordable high resistance thermoplastic shells, composite shells and right through to 12k carbon fibre shells.
We also stock a range of Axor helmets, for any riders that are looking for a good budget helmet which still meets the ECE22-06 safety standards. And they look great too!
Knowing Helmet Safety Standards
There are a lot of different helmet safety standards and it’s important to know which are relevant to you and the type or riding that you’ll be doing.
ECE22-06 is the current safety standard and all road use motorcycle helmets that are manufactured in or imported into the EU, must have the 22-06 certification. ECE 22-06 replaced the earlier ECE22-05 standard, which means that any retailers with old ECE22-05 helmets, are allowed to still sell them, but normally at a sale price to clear the stock. Keep this in mind if you think you’ve found a bargain!
ACU Gold is the safety standard set by Auto Cycle Union for use on track. So if you are doing a track day, or racing in a national championship, your helmet will need to have a current ACU Gold sticker on the back of it.
D.O.T is America’s safety standard for road use helmets, set by their department of transport. D.O.T safety standards are completely separate to the requirements needed in the UK and Europe, although some helmets will be both D.O.T and ECE22-06 certified.
SNELL helmet safety standards have only really advanced in the two decades. Before that, it was organisations like the SNELL foundation that were pushing countries and manufacturers to have better safety standards. They did this by setting up their own testing facility and giving any helmet that passed their test the SNELL certification.
Sharp safety standards were launched in 2007 by the UK’s Department for Transport, and their tests are based upon the European Research activity (COST327) report from 2001. The aim was to give helmet wearers more information regarding the actual performance of the helmet by having a five star rating system rather than a standard pass or fail.
FIM FRHPhe-01 safety standard was brought in to increase motorcycle helmet safety at world championship level. It was a big increase in safety and at its introduction in 2019, not all helmet manufacturers managed to pass it on their first attempt. Since then, some other events have adopted the FIM standard for their own events, like the Isle of Man TT and Manx GP.
FIM FRHPhe-02 safety standard is the latest revision to the original FIM certification, and it has further increased the safety that motorcycle racing helmets must offer. It is by far the most comprehensive motorcycle helmet safety test in the world to date and in 2026 it has started to become the required standard in world championship events.
Motorcycle Helmets that Keep you Safe
In the UK, motorcycle helmets need to be designed and produced following strict safety guidelines like the ones we just listed. We care just as much about your safety as the helmet manufacturers do, and that’s why we only stock helmets that have passed rigorous safety tests and are compliant for use in the UK.
If your current helmet has been through a scrape, or it’s been in use for a few years, it’s time for an upgrade. This isn’t just for bragging rights either, you should replace your motorbike helmet every 3-5 years from first use, or if the helmet is damaged. Even something as minor drop or a cracked visor can put your life at risk – don’t take the chance and invest in a new one ASAP.
Thankfully, we stock much more than just the helmets themselves. We have:
Motorcycle Helmet Visors,
Motorcycle Helmet Race Tear-Offs,
Motorcycle Helmet Pin Lock Inserts,
Motorcycle Helmet Intercom Systems,
Motorcycle Helmet Care Packs,
Motorcycle Helmet Accessories.
If you’ve bought a new helmet, but it still doesn’t quite suit you, or you want to give it an upgrade, our selection of visors and accessories give you all the options you’re looking for.
